Phonics
We follow Letters & Sounds for daily phonic lessons from Pre-School up to the end of Year 2.
Letters and Sounds Phases
Phase 1……. Pre-school
Phase 2-4…. Reception
Phase 5……. Year 1
Phase 6……. Year 2
We begin our phonic teaching in Pre-School. We cover phase 1 of Letters & Sounds which concentrates on developing children’s speaking and listening skills and lays the foundations for the phonic work which starts in Phase 2.
The emphasis during Phase 1 is to get children attuned to the sounds around them and ready to begin developing oral blending and segmenting skills.
Phase 2, 3 and 4 begin in Reception. Being able to spot the sounds that letters make when they are put with other letters is vital for helping the children to decode tricky words when they are reading and writing. The ability to recognise these sounds will help to make your children into fluent readers and excellent spellers!

In Year 1 the children will cover phase 5. Every child will have a Phonics Screening Test in the Summer Term. This involves the children reading 40 words, containing the phonemes they have learnt from Reception, there is a mixture of real and nonsense words in the Screening.
In Year 2 upwards, children will start working on the Read Write Inc (RWI) spelling programme. This will teach children the different spelling patterns covered in Phase 6.
